गिर के शेर क्यों मर रहे हैं ?

गुजरात का गिर राष्ट्रीय उद्यान एशियाटिक शेरों का एकमात्र निवास स्थान होने के कारण प्रसिद्ध है। यहाँ एशियाटिक शेरों की संख्या लगभग 523 से ऊपर होने का अनुमान  है । शेर लगभग 40 किलोमीटर प्रति घंटे की गति से दौड़ सकता है। यह लगभग 12 फुट ऊंची और 40 फुट लंबी छलांग लगा सकता है। शेर की दहाड़ 5 मील दूर तक सुनाई देती है।

गिर राष्ट्रीय उद्यान में एक के बाद एक कई शेरों की मौत के कारण वन प्रशासन परेशान है। यहाँ 12 सितंबर के बाद से 21 शेरों की मौत होने की खबरें हैं। ये शेर कैनाइन डिस्टेंपर वायरस (सीडीवी) के शिकार थे ।यह जानलेवा वायरस कुत्तों से जंगली जानवरों में फैलता है। इसके कारण तंजानिया में 1994 में 1000 शेरों की मौत हो गई थी।

गिर के शेर दो साल पहले भी खबरों में थे, जब कुछ शेरों ने इंसानों पर हमले करके उन्हें मार दिया था। गिर के जंगलों के आसपास बसे गांवों में हो रहे ग़ैरक़ानूनी 'लॉयन शो' के कारण ये घटनाएँ हुई । गाँव के लोग छोटे जानवरों को मार कर शेरों को आकर्षित करते थे। 'लॉयन शो' में शेरों को आसानी से भोजन मिलने लगा। शेर खेतों में सो रहे इंसानों को अपना शिकार समझने लगे और उन पर हमला करने लगे। सरकार के  'लॉयन शो' को बंद करने के बाद इस समस्या का समाधान हो गया।
