Topic 3: Odisha: Olive Ridley Turtles
Instructions: An audio and some Q&A is provided here. Their purpose is to assess your proficiency and level of understanding. It is a conversation between two friends about an endangered species of turtles, named Olive Ridley. Listen to the audio carefully. Play it a second time, and underline the key words given to you. Afterwards, try to complete the activities that are provided. Use a web dictionary such as shabdkosh.com to find out the meanings of new words. Two students should practice. Student 1 acts as a reporter and student 2 acts as a tourist. Parents may role play with their children to practice this conversation.

रिपोर्टर : नमस्ते। क्या आप ओडिशा में रहते हैं?
पर्यटक : नमस्ते। नहीं, मैं दिल्ली में रहता हूँ।
रिपोर्टर : आप ओडिशा क्यों आए हैं?
पर्यटक : मैं समुद्र तट पर जाऊँगा क्योंकि मुझे सूर्यास्त देखना पसंद है। मैं वहाँ ऑलिव रिडले कछुओं को भी देखूँगा।
रिपोर्टर : क्या आप जानते हैं कि ऑलिव रिडले कछुए समुद्र तट पर क्यों आते है?
पर्यटक : ऑलिव रिडले कछुए समुद्र तट पर अंडे देने आते हैं। लाखों कछुए मीलों दूर से तैरकर ओडिशा आते हैं।
रिपोर्टर : अच्छा! ऑलिव रिडले कछुए किस रंग के होते हैं?
पर्यटक : ऑलिव रिडले कछुए हरे भूरे रंग के होते हैं?
रिपोर्टर : ये कछुए छोटे होते हैं या बड़े?
पर्यटक : ये कछुए बहुत बड़े होते हैं।
रिपोर्टर : इन कछुओं के बारे में आप और क्या जानते हैं?
पर्यटक : मादा कछुए रेत पर गड्ढे बनाती हैं। रात के समय एक-एक मादा कछुआ सौ से भी ज्यादा अंडे देती है। अण्डों को रेत पर छोड़ कर वापस समुद्र में चली जाती है।
रिपोर्टर : उन अण्डों का क्या होता है?
पर्यटक : अण्डों से छोटे कछुए निकलते हैं। पक्षी उन अण्डों
और छोटे कछुओं को खा जाते हैं। कुछ ही कछुए बच पाते हैं। बचे हुए छोटे कछुए वापस पानी में चले जाते हैं।
रिपोर्टर : आप हमें बताइये कि इन कछुओं को बचाने के लिए क्या करना चाहिए?
पर्यटक : हमें कछुओं को बचाने के लिए यहाँ के लोगों से बात करनी चाहिए। समुद्र और उसके तटों को साफ़ रखना चाहिए। मछली पकड़ने के पुराने जाल, बोतलें और कचरे को समुद्र में नहीं फेंकने चाहिए। जिस समय कछुए यहाँ अंडे देने आते हैं उस समय समुद्र तट पर लोगों को नहीं आना चाहिए। इससे अंडे नहीं टूटेंगे और ज्यादा कछुए होंगे। कुछ लोग छोटे कछुओं को अपना आहार बनाते हैं। हमें उन्हें समझाना चाहिए कि इन कछुओं की प्रजाति पृथ्वी से लुप्त हो रही है। हमारे पर्यावरण के लिए यह कछुए बहुत महत्वपूर्ण हैं। हमें ऑलिव रिडले कछुओं को बचाना है।
