गैंडा जमीन पर पाए जाने वाले जानवरों में हाथी के बाद दूसरा सबसे बड़ा जानवर है । गैंडे की पाँच प्रजातियाँ हैं: सफ़ेद, काला, भारतीय, जावन और सुमात्रान ।

भारतीय गैंडा असम राज्य के काज़ीरंगा नैशनल पार्क में पाए जाते हैं। यहाँ लगभग २४०० से अधिक गैंडे हैं। जो 2/3 (दो–तिहाई) आबादी है।

गैंडे की त्वचा मोटी होती है । सूर्य की रोशनी से इन्हें नुकसान पहुँच सकता है ।

अपनी  त्वचा को सुरक्षित रखने के लिए वे उस पर कीचड़  मल लेते हैं। गैंडे की ऊँचाई 6 फूट और लांबाई 11 फूट तक हो सकती है । और वजन 4500 से 5900 पौंड तक  हो सकता है । गैंडा शाकाहारी जानवर है । उनकी सींग के लिए उनका शिकार किया जाता है । लगातार शिकार होने के कारण गैंडे की सभी प्रजातियां ख़तरे में है । इस कारण गैंडे लुप्त हो रहे प्राणी हैं, जिन्हें बचाना ज़रूरी है।
